ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Jul 30, CMC – The family of a North Carolina woman who went missing while on vacation here, has released security footage showing the woman before she disappeared.
According to the Royal Grenada Police Force, Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell was captured on camera swimming beneath a jetty on July 22.
Her husband, who is here aiding in the search for her, has said he does not suspect foul play in her disappearance.
The acting Commissioner of the Royal Grenada Police Force, Randi Connaught said the missing woman’s husband, who arrived last week and has been cooperative.
“He’s been in touch with our lead detective on the matter,” Connaught said.
Her husband Cailen Waddel, has since shared updates on the family’s website. On Thursday, he posted that the family has not located her despite officials, loved ones and local volunteers putting hours into the search for her.
The investigation into his wife’s disappearance is ongoing, he said.
“I join authorities in believing there was no foul play,” he wrote on the website. “Liz was last seen swimming in the ocean near Grand Anse, around 5:30 p.m., far from shore. She communicated her confidence in her swimming and location, as well as the beauty of the island.”
Waddell, who is from Cary, North Carolina, flew to Grenada with a female friend on July 11, according to Connaught.
For the first 10 days of the visit, they stayed at a resort on the western side of the island. On July 21, they moved to another residence in the southern part of the island as part of a pre-arranged plan to explore both parts of the island, he said.
Connaught also states that security footage captured Waddell walking toward a jetty and swimming on Wednesday, July 22, the day she was last seen.
“That report triggered an immediate police response, including an initial search of the premises, the surroundings, shoreline and desperate searches of all of the areas in and around that resort,” Connaught said.
When asked about Waddell’s friend and her activities that day, Connaught said: “So far, there is nothing questionable about her account of the investigations, and we continue to receive (her) cooperation.”
The Royal Grenada Police Force issued a public missing person alert on July 23, the day after Waddell was reported missing, Connaught said.
The Grenada Coast Guard and local dive professionals have joined efforts to find Waddell and conducted underwater searches. St. George’s University has also helped with shoreline and coastal searches.
The Royal Grenada Police Force’s drone unit has conducted area surveillance and searches of a 10-mile stretch from Point Salines to Happy Hill, Connaught said. Officials have also reviewed currents, tides, wind conditions and possible drift patterns, and checked local beaches, bays, inlets and other coastal areas.
