National security minister baffled at how murder accused breached bail 81 times

1 min read

NASSAU, Bahamas, Jul 31, CMC -Minister of National Security Myles LaRoda says the police are investigating how a murder suspect was able to miss 81 mandatory check-ins, breaching his bail conditions without having his bail revoked.

LaRoda said the authorities are treating the matter seriously and warned that anyone found responsible for the apparent oversight will be held accountable.

Businessman James McPhee was killed on July 12, just days after celebrating his 59th birthday and 39 year-old Adnan Oliver was charged with his murder. Oliver had previously been accused of robbing McPhee at gunpoint in 2019, with that trial scheduled to begin next month.

McPhee was expected to be a key prosecution witness in the armed robbery case and LaRoda says the circumstances surrounding the alleged bail breaches are a major concern for law enforcement officials and are now under investigation.

“I have spoken to the Commissioner of Police (Shanta E. Knowles) about that particular matter that made its way into the public domain,” LaRoda told reporters, adding “she is very concerned.

“She has given her assurances that the force led by her will do all she can to make sure things like this don’t happen again. But it is a concern, and it just raises the awareness that we have to be ever more vigilant with regards to the monitoring of every individual that is on bail.

“The last consequence is what could happen if any of these individuals slip through the cracks,”  the National Security Minister said, adding “the commissioner is transparent.

“And her words to me is that an investigation will be done. And wherever it leads, if there’s anybody to be held accountable, the individual or individuals would be.”
