GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Oct 27, CMC – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) says  a 20-year-old constable has been arrested amid allegations that he had discreetly downloaded surveillance video footage related to a shooting incident involving Senior Superintendent Prem Narine and Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, earlier this month.

Mohamed, along with two of his workers, have since been placed on GUY$750,000 (One GUY=US$0.004 cents) bail on gun and ammunition possession charges and attempting to pervert the course of justice by discharging a firearmn as a result of the incident on October 12.

In a statement, theGPF said that the constable, who is currently stationed at the Force’s Command Centre, “admitted that while on duty on Friday, October 23, 2026, he discreetly downloaded surveillance video footage related to a shooting incident” involving Narine.

“He stated that he saved the recording to a flash drive as he was instructed to do by The Leader of the Opposition Mr Azruddin Mohamed,”  the GPF said, adding that “on the following day, Saturday, October 24, 2026, Mr. Mohamed dispatched an employee to transport the Constable to his residence in Houston, East Bank Demerara.

“At the location, Mr. Azruddin Mohamed allegedly paid the rank the sum of GUY$800,000 in exchange for the recording.”

The GPF statement said that the police constable “further disclosed that he spent a portion of the bribe money during a shopping spree and handed the remaining cash to his mother.

“As a consequence, the Police Constable has been placed under arrest. Detectives are currently making earnest efforts to retrieve the bribe money, and the investigation into the commission of several offences remain ongoing,”  the GPF said.

Earlier, Mohamed played a 23-minute video as he repeated claims of an alleged “failed assassination attempt of the Leader of the Opposition” on October 12.

Mohamed said he intends to file private criminal charges against Narine maintaining that the shooting on the night of October 12 was an assassination attempt.

Mohamed saidd that the surveillance video recordings of the incident had been captured by the Government’s Safe Country Initiative CCTV cameras and that he had obtained the footage from the Special Branch unit of the Police Force.

He said that the footage clearly shows an attempt being made on his life .

“I will be pressing private criminal charges against Prem Narine. So, I hope the DPP (Director of Public Prosecution) wouldn’t throw the charges out…and remember in Islam that you have to give account to Almighty Allah on the day of judgement, not (President) Irfaan Ali,” the Opposition Leader said.

While he admitted to driving along the road outside Narine’s home twice on that night, Mohamed said he was looking into the issue of abuse of state resources.

“We didn’t come out of the vehicle at no time. We stopped there at no time. You have the videos that showed the time you saw when Prem came out on Bar Street. Mr. Slowe’s video [shows] when he was shooting behind the vehicle, so at no time we came out of the vehicle.

“We passed and we saw the vehicles park there with the engines on, guarding Prem Narine and when citizens of this country want to go to at the station to make a report, they don’t have vehicles available, the police not answering their phones. But this is how they’re abusing our resources, state resources,” the Opposition Leader said.

The Opposition Leader said  he intends providing the Diplomatic community with a statement and copies of the CCTV video recordings.
