ROME, Italy, Nov 3, CMC – Barbadian Jiu-Jitsu star Nia Blackman produced one of her best ever performances to capture the women’s heavyweight title at the IBJJF European No-Gi Championships here on Sunday.
Blackman, who is British-born, copped gold in the 76kg division by defeating Maria Vicentini of Brazil by referee’s decision in a closely contested final.
She earlier disposed of Finland’s Sara Lehto at the semifinal stage.
In a social media post following her victory, a relieved Blackman, who sustained an injury in the earlier rounds, said she was elated with her performance.
“A weekend with a lot of ups and downs, but one I’ll never forget.
“I had a great run in the Open class, but unfortunately picked up an injury in the semifinals. I wasn’t supposed to go back out there, so making it back for day two, competing in the finals and coming home with gold means more than I can put into words,” Blackman said.
“More than anything, I’m so grateful for the team I have around me. When I got injured, it was their belief, encouragement and support that gave me the confidence to go back out there. I know how lucky I am to have people who pour so much into me, stand by me through the difficult moments and want to see me succeed just as much as I do. The gold is a reflection of the people in my corner just as much as it is the work I’ve put in.”
Blackman said she was eagerly looking forward to competing at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championships, scheduled to be held from December 10 to 12 in Las Vegas.
