Airport authority denies decline in passenger traffic

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad,  Sept 16, CMC – The Airport Authority of Trinidad and Tobago Wednesday dismissed media reports that passenger traffic at the Piarco International had declined saying it remains “robust”.

In a statement the Authority said that it had recorded  a strong performance during the July-August vacation period with international visitor traffic reaching a peak of 181,441 in the month of July as opposed to 178,298 for the same month last year.

It said in June last year 155,040  international passengers were recorded as  compared with 147,997 for the month of June this year and that “while passenger traffic figures naturally fluctuate from month to month and year to year, the data does not support a characterization of Piarco International Airport being “significantly emptier”.

Moreover, the Authority said that domestic passenger traffic has “remained extremely buoyant” and that it would continue to work with its various stakeholders, including the airlines, tourism and other industry partners “to forge ahead with strategic  air service development efforts and ensure that Trinidad and Tobago’s airports are positioned  to support the country’s evolving aviation and economic needs”.

The Authority said  that the initiative has already resulted in two new regional carriers to the island’s air service network and that “the outlook” also includes two other international airlines by October providing additional connectivity and greater choice for travellers.

“Piarco  remains  an important regional aviation hub an continues to support Trinidad and Tobago’s connectivity with key markets across North America,  Canada, the Caribbean,  South America, Europe and beyond,” the Authority said in its statement.
