Volcanoes usher in new era in Saint Lucia
CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Oct 19, CMC – Just shy of his 19th birthday, sensational Saint Lucian opening batsman Theo Edward has secured his maiden professional contract with the Windward Islands Volcanoes.
The prodigious talent headlines a 15-member squad announced for the 2027 regional first-class season, marking a historic moment as the franchise begins its first year based in Saint Lucia since its inauguration in 2014.
Edward is one of four Saint Lucians named on the roster, joining fast bowlers McKenny Clarke and Keon Gaston, as well as all-rounder Shadrack Descarte.

The quartet will look to make an impact as the franchise embarks on a new chapter at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
The young left-hander earned his contract on the back of a stellar 2026 domestic campaign. The Windward Islands Under-19 captain finished second on the run chart in the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 Championship, amassing 217 runs.
He further showcased his class in July’s Windward Islands senior three-day tournament, striking 118 against Dominica, the only century recorded in the entire competition.
Edward’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric. He first announced himself on the regional stage during the 2022 Winlott Windward Islands Boys Under-15 tournament, where he smashed back-to-back centuries to lead Saint Lucia to the title.
Clarke, a graduate of the West Indies Academy and a member of the 2022 Under-19 World Cup squad, rejoins the setup alongside Gaston, both having featured in the 2025 Super50 campaign.
Grenadian twin brothers Kirt and Kirtsen Murray have also retained their contracts following strong performances in the Windward Islands Senior Men’s Championship.
The full contracted list is completed by Kenneth Dember, Sunil Ambris, Ryan John, Teddy Bishop, Darron Nedd, Alick Athanaze, Stephan Pascal, Jervin Benjamin, and Gilon Tyson.
The squad balances emerging regional talent with senior international experience, anchored by Ambris, who has scored more than 3,200 first-class runs for the Windwards, and West Indies batsman Athanaze.
Operations under a new head coach commence on November 1, with the players undergoing fitness testing and physical assessments in Saint Lucia.
The local contingent will conduct routine training, conditioning, and match preparations on home soil, with their primary target being the 2027 West Indies Championship, which is expected to retain the 12-match bilateral series structure.
