PARAMARIBO, Suriname, Sept 21, CMC – A third member of Suriname Police Force is assisting investigators into the theft of 11 cylinders containing mercury that had been stored on the grounds of the Geyersvlijt police station earlier this month.

Police spokesperson Inspector Michael Elska said that the latest arrest is a member of  Paramaribo Regional Support Team (RBTP), bringing the total number of persons being questioned in this case to seven so far, including three police officers.

Three of them were released after questioning, while the fourth suspect was released following an initial detention by the Public Prosecution Service.

The police said that following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the police officer was remanded in custody. Last Friday, two police officers  were arrested and remanded in custody with the police not ruling out further arrests.

The police are probing the disappearance of the 11 cylinders of over 500 kilogrammes of mercury on September 18, amid a warning that mercury poses a risk to both people and the environment.
