President Lula and his Vice President thank supporters for the victory on Sunday.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Oct 26,  CMC – Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has congratulated President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election on Sunday.

Lula won the runoff held on Sunday secuing him a fourth term in office.

“St. Lucia values its friendship with Brazil and looks forward to continued cooperation, particularly on food security and access to affordable food for our people. St. Lucia looks forward to building on existing trade in poultry, beef and pork to advance cooperation on food security,” Pierre said in his congratulatory message.

He  said he wanted to  wish President Lula “good health and every success in his new term, and extends best wishes to the people of Brazil for their continued progress and prosperity”.

The Belize government has also congratulated Lula on his victory saying “Belize values its longstanding ties of friendship and cooperation with Brazil and looks forward to further strengthening bilateral relations and deepening collaboration on shared priorities.

“As countries of the Global South, Belize and Brazil have an important role to play in advancing multilateralism, sustainable development, South-South cooperation, and a more equitable and inclusive international order,”  the Belize government said, adding that it is looking “forward to continued engagement with Brazil in pursuit of our shared aspirations for prosperity and development.

Lula won the fourth term in office in a dramatic comeback over his right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro, securing 51.79 per cent of the votes and becoming the first president since the return of democracy in 1988 to win an election after losing the first round of voting.

Lula later told celebratory crowds this election is a “loss for negativity, lies”, later adding “long live democracy”.

Bolsonaro, who is the son of convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro, has so far refused to recognise the result and called for it to be annulled, which experts say is unlikely.

In an unprecedented move, polls were also extended for two hours on Sunday evening after both candidates made requests for different reasons.

Supreme Court President Kassio Nunes Marques – appointed by the older Bolsonaro – confirmed Lula’s victory and said that the voting extension did not cause issues for the count or the electoral process.
