Shaw’s strike earns City draw with United

1 min read

MANCHESTER, England, Oct 26, CMC – Khadija Shaw continued her impressive goal scoring form for Manchester City, but they still had to share the spoils with Manchester United in their Women’s Super League (WSL) match here on Sunday.

Shaw’s early second half strike was canceled out by Elisabeth Terland’s late goal in their 1-1 draw at Leigh Sports Village, with the result ending City’s perfect start to the season.

United’s defenders did well to deny the Jamaican international from getting the ball in the first half, but that all changed in the second half.

Shaw needed just one chance and took it perfectly when Dominique Janssen allowed her to spin on the edge of the box and she struck the ball powerfully past goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the 66th minute.

It was her eighth goal in seven WSL matches and extended her lead at the top of the goal scorer’s table to two.

But United responded well, coming close to an equaliser when Julia Zigiotti blasted over the bar from close range and when Jess Park’s strike bounced off the woodwork.

City seemed headed for their seventh straight win, but with just one minute left in regulation time, Terland fired the ball into the roof of the net after Shaw failed to clear a deep free kick.

The result left defending champions City and Chelsea tied at the top of the WSL table on 19 points with six wins and one draw from their seven matches.
