CASTRIES, Saint Lucia, Oct 22, CMC – Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre on Thursday paid tribute to two brothers who served as specialist physicians for several decades and helped develop Saint Lucia’s healthcare services.

Dr. Peter Archer Wilwyn St. Rose and Dr. St. George Bennett Richardson St. Rose earlier this month, 11 days apart.

“Saint Lucia has lost two specialist physicians who contributed significantly to healthcare development over several decades. Their contributions to the health system in Saint Lucia are immeasurable,” Pierre said in a statement.

Dr. Peter St. Rose, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, died on October 3 at the age of 90, while Dr. Richardson St. Rose, a consultant orthopaedic, spinal and trauma surgeon, died on October 14, aged 80.

Dr. Peter St. Rose began his medical service in Soufrière in 1967 as a district medical officer before working in the Accident and Emergency Department at Victoria Hospital.

After returning from the United Kingdom in 1973, he provided specialist obstetric and gynaecological care until his retirement. His work included supporting women through pregnancy and childbirth and helping families access reproductive health services through Family Planning Clinics in Castries.

He also trained and mentored physicians locally and overseas. His service on the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Council, the Nursing Council and other national health committees extended his contribution to the wider healthcare system.

Dr. Richardson St. Rose returned to Saint Lucia from Trinidad and Tobago in 1975 and served as chief consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Ministry of Health and as a senior surgeon at Victoria Hospital.

His work helped expand the island’s capacity to treat serious injuries and complex bone, joint and spinal conditions.

He also served as a visiting specialist at St Jude Hospital, providing consultations and surgical services to patients in the south. From 1997 to 2023, he provided specialist care at Tapion Hospital and also operated a private practice on Chaussee Road in Castries.

The Government and people of Saint Lucia have joined the brothers’ family, former patients and colleagues in mourning their deaths and honouring their years of service.
