BASSETERRE, ST. Kitts, Oct 30, CMC – The St. Kitts & Nevis Medicinal Cannabis Authority (MCA) says it has achieved a landmark achievement for the medicinal cannabis industry here by securing banking access for licensed medicinal cannabis businesses operating within the regulatory framework.
“This breakthrough represents one of the most significant developments since the establishment of the legal framework for the medicinal cannabis sector in St. Kitts & Nevis and demonstrates the country’s commitment to building a transparent, compliant, and internationally respected industry,” according to a statement issued here.
It said following a series of extensive engagements with financial institutions, regulatory stakeholders, and compliance professionals, a major local bank “is prepared to accept proceeds and conduct banking services for licensed medicinal cannabis businesses operating in compliance with the regulations of the Medicinal Cannabis Authority and the strict guidelines established through its supervisory and regulatory framework”.
The statement said that the MCA and a legal consultant have since held a “successful meeting “with the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank and that “the achievement of a compliant framework creates a legal banking pathway for the development of the medicinal cannabis industry.
“It sends a clear message to investors, entrepreneurs, and international partners that St. Kitts & Nevis has established a secure and credible environment for medicinal cannabis business operations.”
The statement said that access to banking services is widely recognised as one of the most critical components of a successful regulated cannabis industry.
“With this issue now addressed, licensed operators will benefit from access to traditional banking services, including deposits, business accounts, payroll management, and other essential financial services necessary for a modern and transparent enterprise.
“This development significantly enhances the Federation’s attractiveness as a destination for medicinal cannabis investment and reinforces the Government’s vision of
creating a sustainable industry built on compliance, accountability, and economic opportunity,” the statement added.
MCA’s chief executive officer, Nadiv Mills, said the successful integration of medicinal cannabis businesses into the formal banking system is a defining moment for the industry.
“It reflects the confidence that financial institutions have in the regulatory framework established by the Authority and demonstrates that medicinal cannabis businesses can operate within the highest standards of transparency, governance, and regulatory oversight.”
The MCA said that it was thankful to the role played by Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Samall Duggings “for his support and direction in always emphasizing that a compliant banking framework was critical to the industry’s growth and development”.
It also extended appreciation to the former St. Vincent and the Grenadines government minister, Saboto Caesar, who it described as a lawyer and banking and finance law expert noting his “unwavering commitment and years of experience navigating the cannabis banking eco-system in Caribbean region with an emphasis in the Eastern Caribbean.
“ The support and collaboration helped facilitate critical discussions, provide specialized industry knowledge, and contributed to the development of practical pathways that ultimately led to the successful establishment of banking access for the sector.
“Growers IQ and Steve Maximay provided technical assistance regarding the track and trace system which is enshrined in the law as a prerequisite for the opening of the industry.”
The MCA said that as a result, the twin island Federation now offers a regulated medicinal cannabis framework supported by access to banking services, providing investors with greater certainty and confidence when evaluating opportunities within the sector.
“This achievement further strengthens St. Kitts & Nevis’ position as an emerging leader in the regional medicinal cannabis industry and reinforces the Federation’s commitment to creating an environment where responsible investment, innovation, research, cultivation, manufacturing, and patient-focused healthcare solutions can thrive.”
The MCA said that as the industry enters “this exciting new chapter,”it remains focused on its mandate to regulate, facilitate, and support the responsible growth of the medicinal cannabis sector while delivering meaningful economic and social benefits for the people of St. Kitts & Nevis.
It said that over the coming weeks, the discussions that are already started with other banks and credit unions will continue as it pertains to offering banking services to the medicinal cannabis industry.
“The future of medicinal cannabis in St. Kitts & Nevis has never been brighter, and with banking access now secured, the foundation has been laid for sustainable growth, increased investment, and long-term industry success.”
