Ingrid Carter, M.D., Kevin Farmer, M.D., and Gautam Yagnik, M.D., orthopedic physicians who are members of the UHZ Sports Medicine Institute –– a component of the Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida –– will attend the Caribbean Games in Port of Spain, Trinidad. In an effort to share the Center’s world-class care to professional and amateur athletes from around the globe, these physicians will first participate in a sports medicine seminar June 19-20.
Also attending the seminar are therapists, Peter Smith, MSPT; Jorge Giral, DPT, CSCS; and Cynthia Laportilla, MSPT, LMT, JSCC. The physicians will provide a presentation during the seminar on various topics including heat-related issues, elbow pain and shoulder injuries. During the first day of the seminar, Drs. Carter, Farmer and Yagnik will conduct an on-the-field assessment of the knee, shoulder and ankle.
A month after the completion of the seminar, the physicians and therapists will attend the actual Caribbean Games in Trinidad, July 12-19, and provide medical coverage during the Games with other physicians and therapists from the Caribbean.
The Games will feature top athletes from throughout the Caribbean and include a variety of sports –– track and field, volleyball, netball, tennis, boxing and beach volleyball. “The event will provide a useful professional development opportunity for medical personnel who will be functioning during the Games while also bringing everyone together and ensuring that the team is singular in purpose,” says Andre Collins, Medical & Anti-Doping services coordinator in Trinidad. Doctors Hospital and the Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and Baptist Health South Florida are proud to be a part of this exciting event.
