PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – A bomb scare on Wednesday forced Caribbean carrier BWIA to ground a Boeing 737 aircraft, which was bound for Toronto.
The flight, BW 628, was originally scheduled to depart the Piarco International Airport at 4:50 p.m. and to arrive in Toronto at 10.30 pm but police reports indicated that someone called in to BWIA at around 4 pm, saying there were explosives and drugs on board the aircraft.
None of the passengers had boarded the aircraft at the time the call came in.
The scare came as BWIA security personnel were conducting their normal security sweep of the plane before boarding. Police along with firefighters searched the plane, but neither a bomb nor narcotics was found on the aircraft.
Contacted at around 6:35 pm BWIA corporate communications manager Dionne Ligoure confirmed the bomb scare.
“The public can rest assured that, in keeping with international and airline specific safety standards, our very capable security officials are doing the necessary checks to ensure there is no device on board the aircraft,” Ligoure said.
