PARAMARIBO,  Suriname, Sept 4, CMC- A 45-year-old Guyanese national has been remanded into custody  after he was suspected of attempting to smuggle a quantity of cough syrup into Suriname.

In a statement, the police said that the Guyanese national identified by his initials FGJ had also violated both the Aliens Act and the Smuggling Act.

It said that the man was stopped at the Burnside checkpoint because his passport lacked a valid entry.

The police said upon further investigation, law enforcement officers discovered 53 bottles of Tussadryl cough syrup in FGJ’s bag.

“Because it was suspected that these were smuggled, the suspect was arrested, subsequently brought before the court, and detained following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service,”  the police added.
