GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 15, CMC-A senior official of the Shridath Ramphal Center for International Trade, Law, Policy and Services at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) says she had been hopeful that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General, Dr. Carla Barnett would have played a more meaningful role in uniting the region during her first term in office.
Barnett’s first term in office ends in July and her reappointment has caused friction within the 15-member regional integration grouping with Trinidad and Tobago for example, insisting that it will not recognise the Belizean economist after August even as regional countries maintained that she had been properly reappointed to the position for another five-year term.
International relations expert, Dr. Kai-Ann Skeete addressing a conference organised by the Centre for International and Border Studies under the theme “Navigating The Future: Guyana, the Caribbean and Latin America in a Changing Global Environment”, said that as far back as 2021, she had written a newspaper article “Time for a Different Script” providing a “sobering welcome to Barnett.
