GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Mar 24, CMC -The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is urging the Guyana population to be prepared for unstable weather conditions expected to produce widespread rainfall with significant flooding over the next six days.
The Hydrometeorological Service has warned of widespread rainfall, at times heavy, thunderstorms, particularly during the morning into early afternoon periods, and reduced visibility during intense showers.
It said that the potential impacts include localised flooding, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas, water accumulation on roadways leading to hazardous driving conditions, disruptions to outdoor activities, lightning and gusty winds associated with thunderstorms.
The CDC said it is advising all citizens in low-lying coastal communities to continuously monitor their surroundings, and that people should avoid flood-prone areas and take steps to reduce risk.
“Clear drains and waterways to ensure proper drainage. Secure important documents and items to minimise damage. Exercise caution when driving or walking in potentially flooded areas.
“The Civil Defence Commission is monitoring the situation via the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS), using real-time data, rainfall reports, and field assessments for decision-making. CDC is also collaborating with Regional and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and emergency response agencies to ensure preparedness. “
The Hydrometeorological Service said the weather conditions are being influenced by strong low-level convergence, supported by moisture transport from the trade winds. It said this is further enhanced by upper-level divergence, creating a highly unstable atmospheric environment.
“These combined factors are contributing to increased cloudiness, frequent showers, periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, and isolated to scattered thunderstorms,” Hydrometeorological Service said, adding “these unsettled conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, as forecast models indicate that the current atmospheric pattern will remain in place”.
