PARAMARIBO, Suriname, Oct 27, CMC — Guyana captured the 2026 Inter Guiana Games overall title in Paramaribo, Suriname, finishing with 475 points to claim the championship for the first time since 2014.
French Guiana placed second with 444 points, while hosts Suriname finished third on 431.
A commanding track and field performance proved decisive for Guyana, which earned 334 points in athletics to overcome its rivals’ advantages in several other sports.
The Guyanese contingent scored points across all six disciplines: basketball, swimming, futsal, chess, track and field, and volleyball.
Guyana also topped the men’s futsal competition after defeating both Suriname and French Guiana.
Those victories earned the champions nine points, ahead of French Guiana’s seven and Suriname’s five.
The athletics and futsal results helped Guyana withstand a strong challenge from the hosts, who led swimming, chess and volleyball and won the women’s basketball competition.
Suriname dominated swimming with 288 points, collecting 144 each from the women’s and men’s categories. French Guiana followed with 229 points, while Guyana earned 98.
In basketball, Guyana’s women and men each contributed five points for a combined total of 10.
Suriname and French Guiana finished with 16 points apiece, with the hosts winning the women’s title and French Guiana taking the men’s crown.
Suriname also led chess with 18 points, while Guyana and French Guiana each collected 12.
The volleyball standings produced the same totals, with Suriname earning 18 points and its two rivals finishing on 12 each.
Despite those results, Guyana’s substantial advantage in athletics, supported by its unbeaten futsal campaign, provided enough points to secure the overall championship.
The victory ended Guyana’s 12-year wait for the title and added another achievement to its Inter Guiana Games record. French Guiana will host the next edition in 2027.
