CAL flight to New York cancelled due to mechanical problems

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Aug 14, CMC – The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Friday confirmed that a Caribbean Airlines (CAL)  flight that had been scheduled to depart the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CGIA) on Thursday evening  had been cancelled “due to a technical issue with the aircraft”.

Caribbean Airlines (CAL) Flight BW526, which originated from Trinidad and Tobago, was scheduled to  depart CGIA for the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York at 5.55 pm (local time).

But in a joint statement with the management of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation (CJIAC), GCAA said following extensive efforts by CAL’s ground team to resolve the issue, the technical problem remained unresolved. It did not state how many passengers were on the flight.

“Officials from the GCAA and CJIAC collaborated closely with senior representatives from Caribbean Airlines’ Head Office, resulting in a joint decision to cancel the flight to guarantee the absolute safety of all passengers and crew.”

It said the Trinidad-based state-owned Caribbean Airlines has assured the Guyana authorities that all affected passengers are being appropriately accommodated and will be seamlessly rebooked on the next available flights.

“The GCAA engineering team is currently working with Caribbean Airlines’ technical personnel to conduct a thorough inspection of the aircraft and complete the necessary safety assessments before it is authorized for its next departure,” the statement said, adding that “passenger safety remains our paramount concern at all times”.
