GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 27, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) foreign affairs ministers Wednesday expressed their “profound concern” regarding the ongoing and “intensifying economic, commercial, and financial measures” imposed upon Cuba by the United States.
But Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago have “reserved their positions” from the position adopted by the regional foreign ministers.
The two CARICOM countries are official members of the US-led Shield of the Americas alliance, a security pact signed by 17 Western Hemisphere countries in March 2026 and focusing on countering transnational organized crime, drug cartels, and illegal migration through enhanced intelligence sharing and military cooperation.
In a statement, the CARICOM Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) said that the “mounting hardships facing the Cuban people also seriously impact CARICOM nationals studying and living in Cuba, whose well-being remains a priority for the Community”.
