Prepared by the City & Guilds Centre for Skills Development (CSD), part of the City & Guilds Group, this report sets out outcomes of vocational education that have not previously been so comprehensively or effectively articulated.
The report was praised last week in a debate in the UK House of Lords for its focus on high quality teaching and learning. Lord Lingfield, author of the 2012 UK Government review on professionalism in Further Education, said the report referenced a “hugely important” issue that vocational teachers must be equipped with sound pedagogical teaching methods as well as up-to-date knowledge of current technical practices.
Judith Norrington, CSD Director of Policy, Research and Regulation stressed that a conscious decision was made to use the word ‘pedagogy’ to emphasise that vocational education is difficult, valuable, and should be respected in its own right.
Guy Hewitt, City & Guilds Caribbean Manager, noted that one of the key findings of the report is “that vocational education and training programmes should be characterised by learning with a clear line of sight to work, and that specialist vocational teachers and trainers should be at the heart of the system.”
The report has been well received by both policy-makers and practitioners internationally.
