ROSEAU, Dominica, Aug 5, CMC – The Dominica government says it intends introducing international online gaming as it seeks to pursue a deliberate strategy to further broaden the economic base.
Finance Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre presenting the EC$1.15 billion (One EC dollar=US$0.37 cents) national budget to Parliament on Tuesday, said that the strategy would also create new sources of sustainable growth.
“As part of this strategy, we will continue to explore opportunities that can attract increased international investment, foreign exchange earnings, and economic activity for Dominica,” McIntyre said.
He told legislators that in this regard, the Roosevelt Skerrit government intends to proceed with the development of an online gaming industry.
McIntyre said that to facilitate this, the government will revise and strengthen the legislative framework to establish a comprehensive regulatory regime governing internet gaming in Dominica.
He said it will establish licensing requirements in accordance with industry standards, including tests for operators and senior management, ongoing regulatory oversight, regular audits and reporting requirements and strong enforcement powers.
“It will also place significant emphasis on responsible gaming through mandatory age verification, player protection measures, self-exclusion programmes, data security standards and safeguards against fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes.”
The Finance Minister said that the government will establish a dedicated Gaming Authority to regulate the industry and engage stakeholders and international partners during its development.
Debate on the budget begins on Thursday.
