Rain ruins Stanford double-header and forces Saturday replay

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, July 28, CMC – Heavy showers on Friday allowed just 2.4 overs in the Stanford 20/20 Cricket Tournament quarter-final match between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago at the Stanford Cricket Ground.

The match was originally slated for 3 pm but started at 5:11 pm and after eight minutes, the players were sent scampering off the field by a heavy downpour.

The rain then fell steadily all night, forcing the postponement.

Organizers decided that the match would be replayed on Saturday at 3 pm with the second semifinal between Jamaica and Guyana also being rescheduled for Saturday at 7 pm, under lights.

In the short time available, Trinidad and Tobago reached 17 for two with opener Mario Belcon lbw to left-armer Pedro Collins for two and skipper Daren Ganga run out for 10.

After Belcon was plumb leg-before wicket with the score on five in the first over, Ganga was run out through a sharp bit of work from Dale Richards at slip, attempting a quick single with the score on 16.

In the previous over, Ganga had pulled speedster Fidel Edwards to the wide mid-on fence for a convincing boundary, and later edged high to first slip, where Floyd Reifer parried the ball over third man for an amazing six.

It was a frustrating day for the several thousand fans who had come into the ground from as early as noon for the day’s double-header.

Most of the spectators came for the second match between Jamaica and Guyana, and were dressed the colours of the two nations.
