KINGSTON, Jamaica, Oct. 4- The Caribbean School of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at The University of the West Indies, Mona, is deeply saddened by the passing of Brian St. Juste, a veteran producer and journalist and a dear friend of the school.
“Brian worked in film, television and journalism for more than three decades. These are the disciplines we teach at CARIMAC, and he was proof of how much they matter. Through his work he brought the nation’s sport and culture to the screen, and he showed how television can serve public life by giving citizens the debates that shape their democracy, saidDr. Patrick Prendergast, the Director, Faculty, Staff and Students of CARIMAC, Faculty of Humanities and Education at the UWI’s Mona campus.
His bond with CARIMAC began at home. His father, the late Franklyn “Chappie” St. Juste, taught here and helped form generations of Caribbean filmmakers. Brian carried that legacy into his own career and back to us through the students he mentored.
Many in the CARIMAC family remember that generosity. Rae-ann Smith, now Programme Coordinator of our BFA Film Production, first met Brian as an unpaid intern on the World Netball Championships while she was an undergraduate here at CARIMAC. He was directing, but he still made sure she saw everything going on around her.
“I was in the thick of it because he included me,” she recalls. “I learned so much,” Predergast said
Brian understood that you build an industry by bringing the next person in, and that is how we will remember him.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues across the media fraternity. May he rest in peace.”
St. Juste died on Friday, after a period of illness marked by medical complications. He was 68.
