BELMOPAN, Belize, Feb 22, CMC – Belize will host a three-day conferencce on anti-money laundering and combating of financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) which it says will provide a platform for Belizean and international experts to discuss the latest developments, challenges, and best practices.
The third annual Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Conference gets underway here on Monday, with the organisers indicating that this year’s hybrid event, is expected to be attended by over 300 in-person attendees and 200 virtual participants, including compliance officers, regulatory authorities, law enforcement personnel, and other key public and private sector stakeholders.
The National Anti-Money Laundering Committee (NAMLC) said this year’s conference is made possible through the steadfast support of all NAMLC agencies with special recognition being extended to the United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) for its ongoing support.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Christopher Coye as well as the Charge d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, Katharine Beamer will address the opening ceremony of the conference whose sessions are closed to the press.
Established in 2014, NAMLC serves as Belize’s primary domestic coordination and cooperation mechanism for AML/CFT/CPF. It provides strategic advice to the Minister of Finance on the detection and prevention of money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing, develops national action plans, and coordinates Belize’s participation in international AML/CFT/CPF efforts. NAMLC comprises Belize’s key regulatory, prosecutorial, and law enforcement agencies.
Since its inception, NAMLC has overseen landmark achievements, including Belize’s successful Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) 4th Round Mutual Evaluation. NAMLC has been at the forefront of strengthening Belize’s AML/CFT/CPF framework.
