GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Apr 9, CMC – Police said they have seized drugs with a street value of BDZ$1.6 million (One BDZ$=US$0.49 cents) describing the seizure as one of the largest drug seizures in recent history.
The authorities said that they seized over a thousand pounds of marijuana, packaged in 29 large bags, along with a loaded nine-millimeter pistol. The police said that one known suspect is being sought.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Stacy Smith, said the operation on Wednesday was carried out by personnel of the Gang Intelligence Investigation and Interaction Unit, the anti-narcotics unit, and the K nine unit of the police department at a property located in large Bank Village Leeville.
“This operation led to the seizure of a large quantity of marijuana being 29 large bags, which preliminary indication suggests it weighs well over 1000 pounds. Also seized at that property was a nine-millimeter pistol, which contained 12 live rounds of nine millimeter ammunition. “These drugs were discovered in the room of an apartment building, and police are now seeking a person of interest in this matter. The person of interest is someone that has come under the police’s radar before and has been charged for job trafficking before. That is the extent to which I will disclose at this moment,” she added.
She said that the operation is as a result of new initiatives by the police “ investing heavily in technology, in surveillance, in intelligence-led policing, and this arrest or the seizure is a byproduct of that investment”.
