PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Oct 21, CMC – Nestlé Trinidad and Tobago says it is laying off 46 employees mainly across its sales and warehousing teams as it prepares to transfer its distribution operations to the locally-based Massy Integrated Retail Ltd.
It said that 30 of the workers have already agreed to accept voluntary separation packages, while the 16 others have been retrenched.
“Under the new model, the main distributor for the Nestle portfolio in Trinidad and Tobago will be Massy Integrated Retail Ltd (Massy Distribution Division), a leading local distributor with extensive market reach and a strong track record of operational excellence,” Nestle said in a statement.
“The transition forms part of Nestle’s ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency, strengthen market coverage, and ensure the continued availability of its trusted brands to consumers nationwide,” it added.
The company said that the changes affecting employees will take effect between November and December 2026 and that “this follows thorough consultation with Nestle’s Recognised Majority Union, the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union, as well as with non-unionised staff. Separation benefits are aligned with the company’s robust policies and collective agreements.
“Employee assistance has been available to all employees throughout the consultation process. Outplacement support and extended benefits are available to all affected employees,” Nestle added.
Nestlé Caribbean’s cluster manager, Miguel Falcon, had said earlier this month that the new distribution model “allows us to leverage the strengths of a highly capable partner while continuing to deliver the quality products and service our customers expect”.
Earlier this year, workers had been advised to prepare for every possible outcome, as uncertainty continues over the future of the company’s dairy and juices business.
OWTU first vice-president Sati Gajadhar-Inniss had said then that workers remain in the dark because the company has shared very little information beyond confirming it is reviewing the business.
Nestlé had announced in July that it has begun a strategic review of its Trinidad and Tobago operations as part of a wider global restructuring.
