CASTRIES, St Lucia, CMC – Senior officials from eastern Caribbean countries are to hold talks with the Organisation of American States (OAS) to decide on areas of cooperation and assistance.
Dr. Len Ishmael, Director General of the St Lucia-based Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will meet with OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel InsuIza as early as next month as part of wider discussions on a work programme between the two bodies.
She said that the regional programme between the OAS and the OECS will involve assistance with a building codes policy within the sub-region, disaster planning and mitigation, and funding of a scholarship programme.
Ishmael told CMC Thursday the recommendation for the OECS/OAS talks came out of a meeting between Heads of Government of the nine-member sub-regional grouping and a top OAS official last month.
Those discussions with the OAS covered issues related to the funding of OAS scholarships, restoration of democracy in Haiti, and initiatives for the further engagement of Cuba by the rest of the OAS.
