Opposition agrees to meeting following heated clash in Parliament

1 min read

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Nov. 7, CMC – The Leader of Government Business in the main opposition People’s National Party (PNP),  Phillip Paulwell, has agreed to meet with Government representatives on Monday, following a heated confrontation in Parliament earlier this week involving profanity and allegations of misconduct.

Paulwell accepted an invitation from House Speaker Juliet Holness but expressed disappointment over the tone of her correspondence.

He said deep-rooted distrust in Parliament could only be addressed through greater recognition of the Opposition’s role in holding the Government accountable.

“Our role in holding the Government to account and ensuring transparency must be strengthened, not weakened,” Paulwell declared.

He also accused the Speaker of political bias, claiming she had used her authority to advance the interests of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

Paulwell cited Tuesday’s controversial attempt to end debate on an Opposition censure motion against the Government as an example of what he described as partisan conduct.

He argued that the Speaker’s handling of the matter was “absolutely antithetical to the principles and traditions of your office.”

Despite his concerns, Paulwell said he hopes Monday’s meeting will be “a frank and constructive dialogue among equals, and not an occasion for admonishment”.

He suggested that achieving a lasting resolution could ultimately require the involvement of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Opposition Leader Mark Golding, or an independent mediator.
