ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, Mar 10, CMC -The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) says a meeting will  be held on Wednesday to finalise the terms of the agreement on the matters that were raised on Monday following the intervention of Public Utilities Minister, Melford Nicholas, to ed industrial action by workers over wage increases and other matters.

In a statement, the APUA said that Nicholas met with the representatives of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) and APUA “to address matters arising from the industrial action involving some employees of the Authority”.

It said that during the discussions, “the parties engaged in a constructive and amicable exchange regarding the ongoing negotiations and matters of concern. The meeting provided an opportunity for all sides to clarify issues and reaffirm their commitment to continued dialogue

“Following the discussions, union members were asked to return to their respective duty stations and resume their normal work responsibilities. All parties present agreed to reconvene for a follow-up meeting on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, to finalise the terms of the agreement on the matters that were raised,”  the APUA said in its statement.

Earlier, AT&LU president, Bernard de Nully had backed the action taken by the workers at the state-owned APUA, noting that “we gave notice since the first of February 2025 that health and safety issues… must be addressed. They haven’t been addressed.

“We are asking for 10 per cent… It is reasonable. We are not demanding too much…we will not back down,”  he said, describing the workers’ action as a “protest of dignity against the management of the utility company” saying that the union’s patience had reached its limit.

In its statement, the APUA,  the main provider of electricity, water, and telecommunications on the island, said it “remains committed to maintaining open communication with its employees and their representatives while ensuring the continued delivery of essential services to the people of Antigua and Barbuda”.
